June 26, 2001 ~ Editorial New York cement plant is a threat
In light of stricter air quality standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency, the coal-fueled cement plant proposed for Greenport, New York, 25 miles west of Great Barrington just north of Hudson, New York, poses a threat to the Berkshires and, farther east, to the traditionally smog-draped atmosphere of cities along the Connecticut River Valley. The Canadian-based St. Lawrence Cement Company claims a new facility will replace its outdated plant across the Hudson River with far less polluting technology, but coal-fired operations are notoriously noxious, and emissions issuing from a 392-foot smoke stack will inevitably drift east. Berkshire residents have good reason to join forces with Friends of Hudson, the grassroots group opposing the plant.
