WHAT IS PROPOSED: The French-owned Lafarge cement company has applied to burn nearly 5 million used tires in its kiln at Ravena (NY).

WHO IS CONCERNED: Residents downwind of this facility in Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, and others in the Hudson Valley and neighboring states.

DISTANCE TO PLANT: As the crow flies, the Ravena plant is roughly 10 miles south of Albany, 16 miles north of Hudson, and 25 miles west of Pittsfield. A moderate wind can carry pollution at a speed of roughly 15 miles per hour.
